Memories of Growing Up In Berkeley

I always tell people I was rasied as a Cradle Feminist, with Leftist Propaganda in my milk bottle. This legacy has created a left-leaning orientation coupled with a puzzling distaste for orthodoxies of any kind - left, right, or otherwise.

Some memories: playing naked in the fountain in Sproul Plaza, the Carousel in Tilden Park, carob ice cream, hanging out on Durant in the early 80s, Rocky Horror at the UC, punk shows at Ruthie's, metal shows at Keystone, the godawful scary Berkeley public schools, 'free boxes', Cedar-Rose park being built, Ohlone Park when it was just empty lots, field trips to Lawrence Hall of Science, and many more....

That other thread was hella long... new thread!
here's a few choice ones:

the Fruit Stand on MLK (Grove St!) and Dwight Way
Vivoli's Gelato... the first time I ever really got stoned we went to Vivoli's (the one near the original Peets) - the greatest!
Parish managing Fat Slice. He called it the perpetual motion machine.

the history of "hella"

I hope this won't seem too much off topic, but there are so many great
memories in this group, I was wondering if anyone might be able to
help me with a slightly different sort of psycho-archeology. Or, really,
linguistic archeology, to be precise.

My wife, who is actually from England, and myself, who did grow up in Berkeley,
are trying to work out some of the early history of the slang word "hella" --
as in, "that was some hella gnarly shit" or "we are hella gonna be there" or
"there were hella many people at the party".

If you didn't already know, it's appears that this construction began life
sometime in the mid 1970's--perhaps as early as 1976, perhaps even earlier,
and it spread out from somewhere in Berkeley or Oakland. By now this construction
is fairly well known as a characteristic of Northern California slang. What we're
interested in though is not so much where or when exacly it began, but what
were the ways it was used back in the old days.

So, what we're looking for are real, recorded examples from the late 70's or early 80's--
things that you might have in a journal that you kept back then, or in a letter you got
from a friend, or in a poem or a song you have from back then. Basically anything, so
long as you (and we) can be really sure that it really was used *exactly* that way, way
back then. Anything, that is, so long as it is a real quotation of actual usage, and not just
the way you remember people using it.

Though, really, I guess we'd be interested in people's memories too, however fallible they might
be. What we want to understand is how the use of this form changed over the years,
and in particular, what the earliest sorts of uses might have included.

It's a funny question, I know, but it's a serious one too, at least for us. This is the
sort of thing, or one sort of thing at least, that linguists will worry about.

Anyway, if anyone can help us out in any way we will be, of course,
hella grateful.

We totally will.

Hester

So it seems like lots of us knew Hester... it seems like she deserves her own thread.
Thanks for your page Reba http://www.rebawho.com/hester/memories.html

It was nice to see pics of Hester before Terry Barnes... that's when I met her, Terry was living at the Blake St. house - there were a bunch of bands living there - Dragon's band ELF, Terry's band Ape Cult, and Kevin Ike's band 13 (at least Kevin was there part of the time). I remember there was a photo of Mel Gibson from Road Warrior on the fridge with the caption "Is that you Terry?"

Initially I really liked Hester, but then she got weird pretty quickly. I was staying at Tumbleweed's house one weekend and we got dressed up together, she asked if she could borrow a silver belt I had... and it vanished. She and Terry were fighting and getting high and it was too weird for me (I was 14 at the time).

I have some guilt - I saw her crossing S. Van Ness at 16th sometime in the late 90's... I almost stopped to say hello, but the look on her face told me she was still on drugs (that's a LONG time to be doing herion!) and I let her walk by. I'd really like to know what happened with her in those 20 years. Reba says she had a daughter, Gabriela.... she must have gotten clean at some point....why in the world did she get so deep?

I wasn't a big part of Berkeley but Berkeley was a big part of me!

Many of you may not know me, but I bet I’ve hung out, at least for a minute with quite a few of you. I was only around from about ’83 to ’84 and then moved to L.A. <<<BOOOOO (I know, I caught much shit for that one.) But, I covered alot of ground in a short time!

After reading the stories here, I feel compelled to pay homage to those that I still remember and think of from time to time. Although, I know many have left this world, there are still a few out there that I’d love to know are happy and well. If I speak of anyone who reads this please feel free to hit me up and say hi.

About two years ago I looked up Heather Carter online, contacted her and spoke with her for a couple of hours. She sounded great and said she was happy with life. Last weekend I looked her up again and read her obituary!?! I still don’t know what happened to her but I am extremely sad to hear that she is gone.I basically lived on the streets, Durant mainly, and crashed at her house on 6th on many occasions. I was an absolute mess but she always tried to take care of me. When I talked to her a couple of years ago I told her that I was grateful for all she and her family, Lucy, Peter and John, did for me. And to take in a homeless, lost, little pregnant girl on drugs was amazing to me and probably saved my life! I’m doing great now and so is my son. I’d love to just give Lucy a big hug right now. Can anyone tell me what happened?

I think of people gone now like my God brother Michael Hunter who was blatantly gunned down in Emeryville. Still to this day no one knows what the fuck happened. Or like one of my best friends Jerry Ernst who got hit by some drunken ass driver on E 14th in Oakland. Shoulda beat that asshole at the hospital that day Jerry died. He’s lucky he was handcuffed to a bed.
Paul “that’s so anti Christ” Bayloff, my little buddy, who used to be so sweet and so fuckin’ crazy all at the same time. Kim Chipanee (sp?) screaming up and down Durant until that one day…
Cruisin around the streets all night rockin out with Matt Newman.. And Heather….damn girl, I still can’t ‘wrap my head’ around that shit...

I can’t even imagine all the people who I don’t know are gone now.

So many kool memories in such a short time like the numerous nights I spent flyin’ around on the back of Montana’s bike. Burnin’ the man thru the hills, hangin out at the wall, watchin the boys wrench on their shit all night at the house on Monterey. Can’t forget Dave ‘the boy’ Lucky or Chris Mast, u r the coolest. Home cooked chicken versus fast food chicken! LOL. Doing laundry with Julie Lindley on Telegraph. What a fuckin blast that was.

I remember kickin it at Mark Mercer’s house, much thanx to him too; good looking out for me as well man. My old roommate Eric Korman hookin me up with the newest and hardest tunes. Erin Malone, where are you girl? You were such a sweetheart. You and your mom were the most awesome. Hangin out listening to Priest & the Scorpions with Lacy Burnett. Riding BMX bikes with HIPPIE FUCKIN CHUCK, Where are you man? David Phone, Phone home ET, with the El Camino and the kick ass system. Lobster dinner ala Chris Mosier. Chris Harris, such a nice person, I hope he is doing well. Smokin’ the boombastic with Jimmy Minniwhether!

Sleeping at People’s Park hangin out and partyin’ with people I didn’t know so I could crash there. So many kool trippers to chill with!

Back in the day…Rick & Lonnie; Andy & Denise, Connie & Pam. Being the happy homemaker at 'The Web' in Marin, that one lost weekend. Jeff Weller, Phil what up? I remember naming a cat after Toby Rage; too funny.

Squattin at Mark Whittaker’s pad in El Cerrito, listening to Gary Holt play classical guitar and sleeping in a bean bag chair next to the speakers; and lots of Capt. Crunch. Fuck Yeah!

And wasn’t it Zak, the huge Rhodesian that belonged Rick and Lonnie that used to intimidate people into tossing him some food? I loved that big headed sweetie pie! He was at times, my very best friend.

ANNAPURNA’S, my favorite store, still there last time I was in town. To Bertoli’s with Johnny Costa for minestrone soup and sourdoughbread on a cold, rainy day. The biggest & fattest College ave burritos! Peet’s coffee, now gone commercial, I still buy it in the stores though just for sentimental reasons. Over to Aladdin’s for coffee & pastries during an attack of the serious munchies and so I could stare at the waterfall on the wall. (HMMM sounds pretty good right about now!) Arnell’s Pizza… Flints BBQ… Those nights drunk as fuck at Ruthies Inn, basically every weekend, but do remember seeing Testament, Slayer, Venom, etc.; and the Keystone for my very first Metallica show. I think with Dave Mustane even. We had it good back then.

Lots more that I can’t put in text… ha ha ha. Even more I can’t think of right now.

Even if no one ever reads this, I feel better writing it. I miss alot of you and just Berkeley in general.
I know it's changed alot since then, but will always be kool in my mind.

Berkeley kids are hella kool and thanx for letting me hang out. I will always remember those days.

Peace to all.

Robyn. (Morris)

If you spent any time at Ruthie's Inn, you remember Wes Robinson. He was either the (then) old black dude who took your money at the door or the guy who paid you $20 for a gig. Well, he passed away last night. Apparently, he coudn't handle 2007. In some ways I don't blame him, but in others I wish he was still around. He booked my first gig and, 20 years later, offered to hook me up with a dummer so that I could continue my aimless excursion into the world of punk rock. He was a truly sincere human being and he will be seriously missed.

RIP, my brother.

One of my gang's little brothers has died: Joe Ford drowned in a rafting accident on Sunday. He was 31. He is survived by his mother Lisa Murphy, his father John Ford, his sisters Sarah Murphy (41) and Hannah Murphy (36) and his two brothers on his father's side. His memorial service is today in Berkeley. It's just so very, very sad, and not at all the way it should be.

memories II: weird landlord stories?

everybody who ever rented in berkeley [or oakland or SF for that matter] has to have at least one "wacky/eccentric/evil landlord" story. personally i have more than i can even remember.....and at least one i probably would get sued for relating. but we berkeley kids love controversy, don't we?

so what's your weird landlord story? is it one of unchecked greed, uncontrolled vermin populations, or unexpected coolness? let's hear it! let's try to keep names confidential, though.....we wouldn't want to get all litigant.........

Thank You to a Home boy

Not sure where to put this post. It is related to Berkeley. Also could go on the punk tribe… or L.A. or… well I will put it here.

Jenocide and I had movedfrom berkeley to SF and by the time of this story, I think we had moved out of Poncho and Susanna’s. But perhaps not. Maybe I was 16 ½ or 17? She might know better on the dates.

I don’t remember Jenocides’ boyfriends name at the time… but he and Jenocide and I went with a ‘friend’ down to LA to help with a series of showings of ‘the great rock and roll swindle’ movie, by the sex pistols.
I was not a punk, but as Jenocides’ best bud I sure was at a ton of shows in SF.. I was that long blond haired hippy girl in the flowing dresses… in a sea of black leather and spiked hair… but I digress.

After the first showing of the swindle movie was closed down by the cops (In long tan trench coats… how stereotypical eh?) We went to our motel… I don’t remember the name of the hotel but it was in a less then good area of LA. Jenocide went out with her boyfriend to go clubbing.. I decided to stay in the room… I wanted to make a call and the nearest phone was a pay phone down by the street. Jenocide had the key to the room with her… so I left the room unlocked and went to make my call.

When I came back to the room, I found 4-5 black guys in my room and more followed me in and closed the door. They forced me down on the bed and then discussed what was going to happen to me… I leave that conversation to your own imagination… but the killing me after they were done discussion freaked me out. I tried to stay as cool as possible.

All of a sudden one of the guys (who I did not recognize) says something like ‘wait wait wait… girl are you from Berkeley High?’. I went to Berkeley high for a few weeks before I was expelled (Another story for another time). But I jumped on that! ‘yeh!’ I say ‘sure I went to Berkeley high!’. He starts talking fast and furious to his friends… that I am a home girl… that I was cool and shouldn’t be hurt… I forget much of what he said… but I think he even said I dated some guy in Berkeley… that these guys all knew and liked… he just kept arguing… talking.. He moved over to me.. and I think he put his arm around me and moved me closer to the door… After some argument… (seemed an eternity to me)… they decided that they would just take my money and go… One of them tells me to lock the door behind them as they leave…

I am soooooo freaking thankful to that home boy that saved me… from many things… maybe even death?

I don’t know how or if I will ever be able to thank him… but I want to throw this story and my ever felt thankfulness out there into the world wide web! Dude I hope you see this some day.

Thank You

Life, death, diet and corruption in the California state prisons system.

Life, death, diet and corruption in the California state prisons system.

I have recently decided to embark on a free-form study of the California state penal system, diet, and the vendors chosen to serve "food" to inmates, particularly in San Quentin, where there have been numerous deaths in the past year, all health related.
Melanoma, and other forms of cancer are appearing in inmates who had no record of these diseases before entering the prison population.

Also I am compiling information in the process of becoming a vendor (a requirement for bring food into the prison system) and other ways to improve diet among inmates.
This information, I intend to package, speak on, and get funding for solutions. (I have a big mouth and it has become fat and lazy and this is how I make it go out and get a job)

Anyone having ideas, information, reports, or wishing to join me in uncovering one of California's worst corruption and mistreatment scandals are invited to email, or message me. I will not be the head or leader of anything. If any change is to take effect in San Quentin, it will require a whole lot more than me.

How berkeley can you be?" Here's how berkeley I can be.

Declaration of separation. Old left Vs. New left.

This parade, and the ensuing attention it receives, is a perfect example of why the left is not taken seriously in the United States.

I said it.
There was a day when the socialist party, was taken so seriously, that people listened to everything they said. The unions as well.
And when an environmentalist spoke, it too was listened to. Even leftists with a flair for total humor (Abbie Hoffman, who I knew, and Jerry Rubin) were quoted, and their ideas regarding western culture were taken as a serious threat to the status quo of the day.

What happened?
They happened.
The petty bourgeois special-interest groups, who successfully splintered the unity of the left here in Berkeley over 30 years ago.
They in turn gave rise to an even more scary sub-culture, which I call the "Dionysian radicals"
Groups of upper-class, "intellectuals" who used the hard-earned progress of the left, to promote such trivial "revolutionary" activities, as

Sex with children (nambla)
Public nudity (breasts not bombs)
The promotion of drugs
"free love" (read sex with minors, who you first get stoned then fuck)
"Space brotherhood realian existence concepts"
Unprotected bath house sex during the height of the aids crisis (I was there. we protested against. were called "fascists" for our concerns)
Tenants rights (once a very noble idea. now a way to rip people off while you live on their property)
Anarchy ( while living under the protection of an army)
And a general overall idea that anyone, anywhere, at any time could be called "oppressed" "downtrodden" and "a victim of society" anytime they claimed they were.

I watched as this destroyed the left, made us a laughing stock of the world, ruined the progress that came from fighting, protest, and bloodshed, and also alienated us from the rest of the country, who more than anyone in the world needed to hear the message of social change. And all due to the superior, condescending, rude, hostile, and alienating manner of these people who claimed to be "the left", "progressive" "revolutionary" and "struggling"

Insults about States, city offices, police, military, religions, races, beliefs, and conventions were thrown around at the drop of a hat, and anytime someone was rightly insulted by our "leftist convictions" we dismissed them as "fascists" "uneducated" "racists" and "imperialists"
Many of these people were the ones who truck in our food, police our cities, run the government structure, and also teach our children, and work all manner of dead end jobs to pay for their, and our children's welfare. These are the people socialism was meant to reach. The working masses. We failed. Badly
The ones doing the insulting never represented me. they never represented the Black Panther party, Nor the Raza movement, Nor the socialist party, nor the Peace and Freedom Party, Nor the Unions, Nor the people of this city, who died, and were defamed, and ruined in a struggle between us and The FBI, then under the leadership of a notoriously evil J. Edgar Hoover, who spent millions of dollars in the COINTELPRO program.
It is not a fucking bedtime story, people. And every time someone who is not from here, (like 60% of the so-called "leftist progressives" in Berkeley) uses those examples to justify a "party, do whatever you want, sex, drugs, fuck you if you don't agree" attitude, I see the fallen.

James Rector
Kent State
Black panthers
Killed Civil right's workers
beaten, tear gassed, and killed protesters
American Indian Movement
And many others, who were the ones who paid in blood, and with their lives, so that this group of upper-class, self-hating, white "intellectuals" could now claim to represent the struggle of the people, the lower class, and what were then called "the lumpen masses".

Shameful, disrespectful, dishonest, and self-centered, an experience has this been for me and others who were there, sacrificed, and NEVER claimed to represent "the people" (NO one should go throwing that phrase around lightly"

Cleaning house:
I tell you now, Until we purge our ranks of tinfoil-hat wearing, public nudity-loving, dope loving, and self-centered, orgiastic, pseudo-spiritual, and pseudo-activist partiers, (Burning man people, are you listening?) many of whom were also proven to be working for the FBI in the 60's and 70's as agent provocateurs, we will never, ever, have a "movement" that can affect any real, valuable, constant social change.

Examples: see the conservative guy's site http://www.zombietime.com for examples of people claiming to be leftist, at everyone's expense.
Note the pictures of one guy with a sign saying "fuck middle America" (neither I nor anyone I know can identify him as a local to SF or Berkeley) and signs like "we're better off without the WTC" and other "radical" slogans.
Cowards. Provocateurs. Showboats. Grandstanders. Hubris. Cruelty.
You do not now, and never did represent the struggle s of the people, the lower classes, or the left.
Do I agree with the government? Hell no. I hate the government.
But I love my people.
Americans. Many of whom did not have the benefit of a worldly education as I did, even being homeless, and alone for much of my life.
It was these same kinds of people, when stirred to action, that successfully fought and defeated the British crown, establishing this pluralistic society.
And now, the "left" insults, and alienates the very people we were supposed to educate and bring into the fold with logic, honesty, and brotherhood, (read sisterhood if it suits you better) The masses of hardworking people who for no other reason than their upbringing, and brainwashing, are very ignorant at present to they government they support. Yes, they need education. Yes, they can be insulting. Yes they can be fucking insufferable, and mean, and racist. This makes no difference. THEY ARE THE ONES WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE REACHING.
Singing to the choir means nothing. Like an anti Klan rally in Berkeley, after the Klan was run out of here 25 years ago, exercises in self-congratulation, and self glorification, are shameful mutations of what once was meaningful social change.

Something that would be revolutionary at this time would be for these people to put down the dope, and the parties, and the total immersion in cultures they do not understand, that often want nothing to do with them, and start reaching out to their kind.
White, black, Latino, Native and Asian American, middle-class people, and lower-middle class people who do not mean to offend with their political ignorance. People who work their whole lives through. When I can see that respect again, and see a REAL open-mindedness, and REAL compassion towards people who are different from you, no matter whether they are above your or below in class, no matter what color they are, and no matter what their beliefs are, THEN and only then, will we, the left, be living up to what our founders envisioned for us all. A greater level of understanding, and higher function of the human spirit, with total equality as its goal.
Leftism is a SPIRITUAL idea. Do not profess "global love and peace" while you are locally insulting and hostile towards anything that currently suits your fancy. THAT is a sign of ruling class, dilettante, mental and social laziness.

I am ashamed of us. Seriously. During the party, the torch that was meant to be passes was dropped, unceremoniously in the mud, and to be truthful it has not been picked up by many.

Let's pick it up again.

Let this diatribe serve as notice, of formal separation, ideologically, spiritually, mentally, and socially, between myself, and the False "left" may we never be confused for one another ever again. However, even if we are not on the same side ideologically, when I meet my people, and you are all my people, I will show respect, even if we do disagree, and there will be the peace. For me at least.

Vote on Liquidlights

So the guy I ejected demanded reinstatement, I decided to let the tribe vote on it. Aye or Nay - Liquidlights?

Here's his letter to me and my reply:

Liquidlights S wrote:
> so it is OK to passively agressively diss dead
> heads and other alternative hippie types on your
> tribe, but when one of those who you are dissing
> gets upset at being stereotyped and responds in
> an out of the box fashion..they are otta here
> huh?.......classic left hypocracy, and you
> wonder why Berkeley is the Butt of so many
> jokes..... Hey He calles me a "tye dye
> fascist" I only called him a a cube working
> nose in the air yuppie... I did nothing more
> then being more honest with my language and
> calling him on his personal insults of my dead
> head brothers and sisters...you should reinstate
> me,...unless this tribe is about one sided
> insults, then I should be otta here

I wrote him back:

Talk about a sore loser!

I would reinstate you if you would APOLOGIZE ... but no, you're just continuing attack agressively.

I happen to know the person you attacked, and he happens not to be any of the things you claim him to be. If you don't know someone, don't tell them what they aren't. It just makes you look mean and stupid, not "honest with your language". And it actually was someone else said "tie dye fascist" and he didn't call you one he quoted Marsh from the Tie dyed Fascists. You really should look at your posts closer before you get all riled up, and maybe you should read what you write before you send more vitrolic filth all over the internet.

If you don't like us dissing deadheads, then why don't you tell us what is good about deadheads - not that "you all were just super jealous because we all got the best girls, the best recreational activities, the coolest cars, houses and parties" That statement in itself projects a yuppie attitude - girls, parties, houses and cars? And you're accusing someone else of being a yuppie? Really, you need to check yourself.

If you had enetered the conversation with some modicum of restraint, then we could have had a lively but respectful conversation about the merits and minuses of being a deadhead. But no, you took the low-road and decided to come in all guns blazing and shoot the first person you saw. Unfortunately your bullets were flaccid and your aim was low, your attack fell flat and you got yourself ejected. Now you're demanding reinstatement or else I'm a hypocrite... yes - I see no problem in complaining about the deadheads in my town, but I do see a problem with you personally attacking people in the tribe. Nobody attacked you, you just got defensive, that's not my problem.

I'm going to have the tribe vote on it democratically. I'll reprint these letters and they can decide if you should be reinstated.

Does anyone else have a knee jerk reaction against the Grateful Dead?

I used to get SO annoyed when the dead came to town... and the week that they played at Berkeley Community Theater I had to climb past deadheads to get to class in the theater building. EEEWWWW!

I can't stand the Dead.

i was thinking about how lucky we are to have grown up in Berkeley today after hearing from Jon S.

i mean to say that as big as the bay area is, and as broad and diverse and berkeley can seem to be, it's really a very small town.

We were so lucky to be so free to make so many mistakes, and (for some of us) fuck up over, and over, and over, and still know people from all walks of life, interest, and economy.

As a 14 year old, sleeping in a trailor in the parking lot of the pizza joint, and sign shop off Dwight, at Telegraph, i knew and spoke daily with professors, students, atheletes, cops, kids, junkies, poets, philosophers, SSI recipients, communists, socialists, anarchists, utopians, situationists, republicans, democrats, muslems, buddists, yogis, and street people.

cracked as it all was, and as fedup with it as i acted most of the time, i think i never had it so good.

bless to have had a such a broad view, even if i wasn't always looking.

thought i'd remind you, cause i'd forgotten.

Need to lease office space for non-profit

This may seem off topic, but hear me out:

StandUp For Kids (a national nonprofit that does outreach to homeless youth) is in need of an office space in downtown Berkeley. (Kids, Berkeley, see the connection?) :-) As the new regional trainer I am starting from scratch setting up an office in the Northern California.

I need a small office to rent for under $800 a month. My ideal situation would be to share a floor with other companies but with my own private office. I would love to have it be more community minded because being locked up all by myself in an office might drive me crazy!

If you don't know of a specific location but have suggestions on where to look (other than craigslist and the Tribune) I would greatly appreciate it!

Berkeley. beautiful. ugly. strange. unique. this is and was my home.
This is the tribe for kids who were homeless here, lived here, saw the riots, survived crack, herpes, AIDS and public schools. the tribe for those who know the nooks and crannies of berkeley. for kids who remember town and country, stubbies, trojans, the redcoats, kojack, windowpane, WSB, ESO, SSS, Cliff, the first slalom skateboarder here, catching th 51, 72, 7, 8, 15, 34, F and 65, lines, for those who made out at the wall, saw the uptones, and most of all for the ones who died. we remember them with love.
feel free to join! and flame the hell out on any and all of my opinions or those of anyone else.
there will be no editing, nor censorship. period.

Welcome to a site celebrating the history of a group of performers that devoted, in many cases, a large portion of their lives to performing THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. Every Saturday night from 1980-1995, the cast of Indecent Exposure would appear at the UC Theatre in Berkeley, CA to put on a show to amaze, astound, possibly confuse, but always entertain our audience.
