Wes Robinson RIP

topic posted Mon, January 1, 2007 - 1:50 PM by  Scotty-o
If you spent any time at Ruthie's Inn, you remember Wes Robinson. He was either the (then) old black dude who took your money at the door or the guy who paid you $20 for a gig. Well, he passed away last night. Apparently, he coudn't handle 2007. In some ways I don't blame him, but in others I wish he was still around. He booked my first gig and, 20 years later, offered to hook me up with a dummer so that I could continue my aimless excursion into the world of punk rock. He was a truly sincere human being and he will be seriously missed.

RIP, my brother.

he paid you $20? he must have run out by the time he got to us...

seriously, his contribution and legacy is substantial even if we're the only people who know about it. i will certainly miss him.

seriously though, it is sad to see him go. he may have been eccentric in his own way, but weren't we all? and he gave a lot of kids in bands a venue to express themselves that otherwise would not have existed. it's guys like him that make real community possible. things have only gotten worse than back in the day, in terms of "non-professional" bands finding places to play, especially in the bay area where the DJ is king/queen.

Ugh! Come on down to the South Bay some time. There are literally two places left to see original live music. We used to have an old theatre in downtown Campbell where the kids would put on punk shows (yes, I said that like an old fogey), but it's been sold and will be reopening next month as an ultra lounge. Yep, the age of the ultra lounge is upon us. Bad DJ music and $8 Coronas will ruin our society.

C'mon, they still have live music at the Barnes & Nobles in that mall in Milpitas...

                Barnes and Noble pays $30/gig.

Seriously though, maybe we slacked on hanging out there? Has anyone actually spent an afternoon hanging out there recently?

I've got a B&N two blocks from my house, but I order all my books online. Way to support the local scene, eh?

But hell, I'd drive to Milpitas for $30! Anybody want to put a band together? We could do some Who covers and maybe a Motorhead song or two. Let me get my amp out of storage and I'll meet you there!

                  :-)

Wes had big dreams. I just thought of him recently- Thanks for posting this- RIP , Wes...
